The history of today
The original history magazine, History Today, has been published monthly in London since January 1951. Our founder was the enigmatic Secretary of Information Brendan Bracken, editor of the Financial Times and loyal lieutenant of Winston Churchill.

From the 2002 Churchill Faithful Chela article by Charles Lysaght:

After the war, Bracken had the idea of starting a historical magazine with a greater appeal than the academic journals of the universities. This is how the Financial News Group started 1951 History Today, published by his former assistant Alan Hodge in collaboration with Peter Quennell.

"The love of history went through his words," historian A.J.P. Taylor, who was present at the Claridges launch and was impressed by Bracken's scholarship and his commitment, which needed to be recognized, to keep up with the magazine, even if it initially didn't bring in any money.
